Overcoming obstacles to wellness
Sometimes when we first meet, I will say to a new client, if you could wave a magic wand, what would you wish for your wellbeing? That way we both know what’s possible if it wasn’t for… any obstacles getting in the way.
Wouldn’t it be handy to have a Harry Potter wand to produce at will, blasting any obstacles in your path? The truth is, any journey to wellness has twists, turns and invariably a colourful series of obstacles strewn along the way.
I’ve come to regard the obstacles I meet through working with my clients as friendly markers of progress along the way. I see them as a challenge to overcome and I enjoy the process of working through them together. Over the years I’ve become skilled at recognising the nature of different blocks and gradually more skilled at helping others overcome them.
I define an obstacle to cure as anything getting in the way of a person’s return to full health and wellbeing. Often, they only become visible when we have been working together for a while and some things have improved, but some have not and it becomes apparent there are some blocks getting in the way.
Obstacles can take many forms…
Some of them are cleverly created by our own minds, intent on keeping us distracted from contentment – we all know these ones… the little voices that tell us we’ll never get there or our dreams are not possible so why bother… negative thinking, self-sabotage, low confidence, procrastination…
Others come in the form of difficult relationships, usually family, who become agitated when we choose a different path because we’ve become tired of the same old ways of relating and being.
Others could be related to lifestyle and diet, lack of sleep, hydration or nutritional issues
A toxic work environment could be an obstacle or a partner who takes things out on you and the kids rather than getting the necessary support.
Sometimes the obstacles take the form of past illnesses (never well since) or an overload of past medications that have left a toxic residue in the body – for example frequently repeated rounds of antibiotics/steroids or long years of the contraceptive pill or other medical interventions. It may be necessary to give specific attention in order to clear this history fully from the body.
All of these obstacles require a different approach but with care and attention, it’s possible to gently and permanently reduce and remove their impact, to climb over them or reduce them to dust.
Of course in the case of challenging relationships, with ourselves or another person this doesn’t have to mean ending a relationship but simply finding healthier ways of expressing and communicating, letting go of anxiety, building confidence and clearing past patterns.
All of these are aspects of my work, tackled with a variety of tools from the toolbox; whether specific natural remedies, supplements, family line work or emotional stress techniques – the magic wand I wield is crafted from ongoing study and experience with many women over the years.
And as I regularly remind my clients, just like I remind myself…
‘Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen.’ Goethe
